Monotone Reading Aloud

Why does Donald Trump talk monotone when he reads someone else’s words?

Donald Trump is functionally illiterate, or nearly so.

Functional illiteracy is not the same as being actually illiterate. Illiteracy is the inability to read and write in your native language.

Functional illiteracy is the inability to decode written language in a useful way that enables one to deal with it in a productive way.[1]

Trump has admitted he doesn’t read on a regular basis. Aids have said he doesn’t pay attention to reports longer than a single page, and that page has to include simple pictures and diagrams, and that they have to insert his name at regular intervals just to get him to look at written reports.[2]

So, when he is reading, he can only read. He can’t read and simultaneously interpret the words he is reading. The intermediate step that most adults take where they see the words on the page and decide whether it’s appropriate to sound excited, or quiet, or sad simply doesn’t take place in his mind.

Think about reading a book to a child for the first time. Most adults don’t read it monotone. Even though it’s the first time seeing these words in that order, you can make a good guess at how to read it in an interesting fashion.

Now think about a young child reading that same book the first time. They don’t have the skill of interpreting on the fly. They just sound out the words and get through it.

Trump reads at that level.

(Off Topic = OT) - Behavior - Conduct

...

Trump can read, or he can understand (as much as he understands anything). He is not capable of doing both at the same time.

If he has a learning disability, he could have been taught methods to overcome this limitation, such as taking time to prepare ahead of time, having someone read the statement to him aloud, or having larger font, or taking notes on the statement to key his inflections. But that might cut into his “Executive time” watching people fawn about him on Fox News.
